Very Impressive iPad Trial App

TabLit Applications has relesed its TabLit: Trial Notebook app for the iPad.  I must admit, from what I have seen it looks pretty darn good. Full disclosure, since I am no longer using an iPad in court I have not purchased the app (particularly with a $90 price point). But reviews from actual users are positive and see no reason to misconstrue the product representations.  For example, the app hass:

• Multiple levels of customizable tabs for full trial organization.
• Pop-up windows for case notes, witness information all at your fingertips.
• Examination outlines in true outline format, Q&A format and more...
• Evidence checklist with witness cross-reference to examination outlines.

Tablet Sales Waaayyyy Down

As reported by USA Today tablet sales are way down, including the iPad.  According to the report: "Fourth quarter and year end tablet shipment figures . . . show that growth has nearly evaporated for the iPad, the iPad mini, and competing Samsung and others."

Let me say that I have always been a huge fan of the tablet platform. I was carrying a Motion Computing slate computer  (as they were called then) more than a decade ago. I have been singing the praises of tablets, and especially the iPad, for years. I still use my iPad frequently. However, I understand why sales are down. My iPad has never fully replaced my Mac Book Pro as my go to road warrior machine.  And now that I have an iPhone 6 Plus I can do everything on my phone that I can do on my iPad. Those are the same causes for the downturn highlighted in the USA Today article.

Are tablets going to disappear anytime soon?  I don't think so. Sales are flat but not gone. And there are millions of units out there. Apps will still proliferate, they are simply going to be written cross-platform for smartphones and tablets.

Sony's Digital Paper - A Tablet Just For Lawyers

OK, this is pretty cool.  Sony has an ultra thin, ultra big screen tablet specifically targeted for us lawyers! The Digital Paper.  It's a bit pricey at $1,100, and I haven't actually held or used one, but it sure looks awesome.  Here's what Sony has to say and show about it (be sure to click on the photos for larger, up close views):

How To Find Your Lost iPhone or iPad

If you are a lawyer carrying an iPhone or an iPad, it is likely that device is jammed with important and confidential information.  What happens if you misplace that devise, with all of that important information?

Fortunately Apple has thought of such an unpleasant event, and the iOS operating system has built in security measures.  You can track your lost device, or you can remotely sweep its contents clean (a super erase if you will). However, for those measures to be available to you, you have to set them up on the device, and you need to know how to utilize them.

Devices Going Big and the iPad Suit - Is that A Tablet In Your Pocket?

BGR, in part quoting The Wall Street Journal, says Apple is specking out a bigger smartphone screen and a 13 inch iPad screen.  These developments would appear to fall in line with the bigger is better trend hitting the mobile device world.  "Phablet" is the new buzz word in mobile devices. The combination device is intended to give tablet users a screen they can read without a magnifying glass, and a device that they call simultaneously call on.  Samsung has plans to roll out a new phablet design of its own, as does LG. Other developers will clearly follow the lead of these mobile titans.

The phablet is a hard call for me.  With middle age I now must resort to my cheater reading glasses more often. That makes using my iPhone more challenging.  At the same time, I cannot envision dropping my iPad in my pocket, as I do with my iPhone.  I could see using a phablet with a Bluetooth headset, but I cannot imagine walking around town with it pressed against my ear.  For the time being it looks like I will continue to be a two device guy.

Regarding that pocket problem I mentioned, there is a solution.  The iPad suit!  Yes, that's right. For the gentleman who wants everything there is now a bespoke tailored suit that includes a large interior pocket in the coat for the discreet storage of your tablet.  Fun stuff!

Apple iOS 7

Apple devotees always have higher than reasonable expectations for new stuff coming out of Apple's annual developers conference; and advance reviews of new operating systems from Apple are usually hyper critical.  Guess what?  Apple has announced the new iOS 7 operating system for iPhones and iPads, and the advance reviews are not all bad.  In fact, I would say this year's advance reviews are more positive than usual.  Some techies are even loving what they are seeing.

Making Connections With Your iPad

How many of you go to CLE programs?  How many of you are receiving the materials for the program on a memory stick?  How many of you are having problems reading those materials on your iPads?

Aren't You Stylus!

I have actually done a bit of research into the tablet computer.  Depending on which myth you believe, Bill Gates could have been the first, biggest proponent of the platform.  Then again Steve Jobs, and Apple, got the revolution rolling with the iPad.  As for Mr. Jobs, his vision of the tablet was clearly one where finger replaced pen.  Fingermanship is certainly a viable option with touch sensitive tablet screens.  I usually resort to the primary digit to navigate through my iPad screens and to type on the built in keyboard.  For heavy duty work though, and particularly for writing on the screen, I find that a stylus is better than the finger.

Like everything else, there are plenty of stylus options to choose from.  Today I want to share my two favorites with you.  First on my list is the Bamboo stylus.  There are three versions, the Solo (closest thing to a full size pen), the Duo (a combination stylus and ink pen), and the Pocket (with a telescoping body)

I prefer the Bamboo because of the circumference of the body, and the sensitivity of the writing tip (called the "nub") when it is on the screen.  Having used Bamboos for more than a year, I have also found them to be well made and sturdy.  My particular favorite is the Duo because of the ink pen feature.  Ink is still necessary in the lawyer world.  With the Duo I am not scrambling for an ink pen when I need one.  Price range on the Bamboo is $29.95 to $39.95.

My second favorite stylus is the Jot.

Jot

The Jot's innovation is in the flat plastic disc (Jot calls it a "ballpoint") that makes contact with the tablet screen.  By this ballpoint the Jot delivers the most precise writing experience.  It is the mechanical pencil of the stylus world.  Jotaholics love their Jots like few other accessories.  It is second on my list because I find it too precise, and because I am not fully invested in the sturdiness or finger feel of the disc.  Like the Bamboo, the Jot also has multiple models including the original, smaller with mobile clip, rubber grip and magnetic cling, precision stylus and ink pen combo, and bluetooth pressure sensitive stylus.  Price range on the Jot is $19.99 to $99.99.

Origami iPad Keyboard Case

I was in Chicago (I love that town!) last week for the annual meeting of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.  I was stunned by how many of my colleagues are now carrying iPads.  I would go so far as to say upwards of 50-60% of the crowd.  This is a huge uptick from a couple of years ago.  It gave me a great opportunity to learn about new gadgets and apps for my beloved iPad.

iPad Mini

Apple is scheduled to release its iPad Mini today.  The new tablet has a smaller screen and footprint, designed to compete with the smaller e-readers that are on the market.

For me this is a no brainer -- I don't need smaller!  The idea of anything smaller than the iPad's current dimensions doesn't make sense to me.  As a real mobile computer I need the extra screen size of the iPad.  Anything less would mean getting out a magnifying glass.  In fact, I have a smaller screen at my disposal.  It's called my iPhone!  One of the reasons I was so excited about the iPad when it was originally introduced is because it was bigger than my iPhone, but smaller than a full sized laptop.

Even with the standard iPad I found myself reaching for my cheater reading glasses more and more.  If I just wanted to read books on my iPad, I wouldn't have an iPad.  I would have saved hundreds of dollars, and bought a Kindle or a Nook.  I don't just read books on my iPad.  It is a full blown computer for me.  For that I need the bigger screen size. Particularly for courtroom use, the idea of going any smaller than the current iPad screen size would seem to me to be a real handicap.

Don't forget, I love Apple!  But, for real mobile trial lawyers too much of a small thing may not be a good thing. . . .

Google Set To Enter Market With $99 Tablet

For all you folks considering shelling out big bucks for an iPad, hold on a minute. . . .
Boy Genius Report is reporting that Google is about to hit the street with a $99 tablet.

Working with its hardware partner ASUS, Google will have two models, a thinner version of the current $199 Nexus 7 and the second will be a new $99 model.

Is this the start of the big price war that will compel Apple to lower the price on its iPads?  I doubt it.  But it sure sounds like there will be an affordable alternative available soon.

Deposition Transcript App

I think depositions are a great tool for family law lawyers (provided your client can cover the costs).  They allow for spontaneous questioning.  They commit the witness then and there, without time for lawyer assistance and reflection.  In California, with our liberal discovery rules, depositions can avoid a lot of the objection games that goes on with written discovery.

Deposition practice has long been the beneficiary of innovative technology.  The transcription machine is the perfect example.  The list goes on:  real time; video depositions; remote depositions and depositions by Skype; transcript review and annotation software.  This evolution of technology has now come to the tablet platform.

My virtual friend Ted Brooks, at his Court Technology and Trial Presentation Blawg, has written another great app review.  This time he looks at  TranscriptPad.  Ted introduces the app as follows:

First off, a disclaimer.  I do not like Microsoft.  I think the company creates software that is just good enough to function at a bare minimum.  It releases products prematurely, and before the bugs and kinks are worked out.  It provides terrible support.  Unfortunately for most lawyers it is the only game in town, so we live with it.

Now Microsoft has announced its new line of tablet computers.  Called the Surface, this piece of hardware is Microsoft's competitor to the iPad.  Price point has not been published yet.

Here is what the Microsoft website says about the line:

Advances in Industrial Design

Conceived, designed and engineered entirely by Microsoft employees, and building on the company’s 30-year history manufacturing hardware, Surface represents a unique vision for the seamless expression of entertainment and creativity. Extensive investment in industrial design and real user experience includes the following highlights:

• Software takes center stage: Surface sports a full-sized USB port and a 16:9 aspect ratio – the industry standard for HD. It has edges angled at 22 degrees, a natural position for the PC at rest or in active use, letting the hardware fade into the background and the software stand out.
• VaporMg: The casing of Surface is created using a unique approach called VaporMg (pronounced Vapor-Mag), a combination of material selection and process to mold metal and deposit particles that creates a finish akin to a luxury watch. Starting with magnesium, parts can be molded as thin as .65 mm, thinner than the typical credit card, to create a product that is thin, light and rigid/strong.
• Integrated Kickstand: The unique VaporMg approach also enables a built-in kickstand that lets you transition Surface from active use to passive consumption – watching a movie or even using the HD front- or rear-facing video cameras. The kickstand is there when needed, and disappears when not in use, with no extra weight or thickness.
• Touch Cover: The 3 mm Touch Cover represents a step forward in human-computer interface. Using a unique pressure-sensitive technology, Touch Cover senses keystrokes as gestures, enabling you to touch type significantly faster than with an on-screen keyboard. It will be available in a selection of vibrant colors. Touch Cover clicks into Surface via a built-in magnetic connector, forming a natural spine like you find on a book, and works as a protective cover. You can also click in a 5 mm-thin Type Cover that adds moving keys for a more traditional typing feel.

An Amazing Windows Experience

Two models of Surface will be available: one running an ARM processor featuring Windows RT, and one with a third-generation Intel Core processor featuring Windows 8 Pro. From the fast and fluid interface, to the ease of connecting you to the people, information and apps that users care about most, Surface will be a premium way to experience all that Windows has to offer. Surface for Windows RT will release with the general availability of Windows 8, and the Windows 8 Pro model will be available about 90 days later. Both will be sold in the Microsoft Store locations in the U.S. and available through select online Microsoft Stores.

Do I think it will work as advertised?  Of course not.  Will Microsoft sell a bunch of them?  Surely.  If anyone out there buys one please write us with your thoughts.
