The Joys of a Home Office

First off, I am a firm believer in the traditional brick and mortar law office. For me it is important to have a place dedicated to work and my law practice. I can control the environment. I make it louder or quieter. It is secure, and private. It gets me closer to my co-workers. Also, I firmly believe family law clients expect an office (rather than a coffee shop or a public library). I believe a physical office is an important component of a lawyer's credibility and reputation. Other lawyers will argue contra, but for me a professional office is a must.

That having been side, I also have a wonderful home office that I use a lot. Being able to get away from my traditional office can be a real refresher. There is also a sense of comfort and satisfaction in being able to work from home in sweats and a t-shirt -- while still being able to be productive. Having the dogs running around can also be very therapeutic.




So, how do I make it work?

Below is a picture of my home office. I think it is pretty nice.

Big secret: I am writing this post from that very desk.  Could have just as easily been my law office desk. Who could have known?

What's really nice about my home office?

• That wall of bookshelves in the back is what makes it. Plenty of storage to keep the space clutter-free. Also pleasing on the eye.
• I have a Google Home device on the shelves to the right (a thank you gift for serving as President of the Northern California Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers) so I can listen to music, check the weather, check traffic, etc.).
• Jazz makes life so much better!
• The windows let in light and fresh air.
• Take a deep breatttthhhhhh....

What's functional about my home office?

• The desk provides a large work surface.
• I love the wood. My wife hates it because I bought it a Cost Plus.
• There is a full-size, all-in-one, wireless printer/scanner/copier on the shelves to the left.
• Can't tell you how many times I have had to print something before leaving for court.
• Make sure you have plenty of extra paper and toner. That stuff tends to run out at the worst times.
• I have a Mac (with its Giant screen) installed on an Ergotron adjustable platform. With it I can have a stand-up computer when I want it, or I can drop it down to desk level.
• Google Wi-Fi allows for connectivity of everything
• So nice not having a web of tangled wires laying around

Then there is the technology that really brings it all together.

• Telephone.
• At my brick and mortar office we have a VOIP telephone system from 8x8. 8x8 also has a virtual office app for smartphones, and virtual office software you can install on your c computer. I have it installed on my iPhone, my Mac, my Mac Book Pro. With the app I can forward office calls to my iPhone and computers. I can retrieve office voice mails from my other devices. The iPhone connects to the wi-fi network so that spotty cell coverage is a non-issue when making and receiving calls. No one on the other end of a phone call could ever guess I was not in the office.
• Our 8x8 service also includes faxing, although faxes have pretty much gone the way of the Do-Do bird.
• Mac Book Pro. Goes with me everywhere. Sitting on the desk at home it gives me a valuable second computer and monitor. Also gives me a change of scenery if I want to move away from the Mac.
• Actually typing this blog post on it.
• If I want a third computer or a third monitor, out comes the iPad Pro with keyboard.
• Legal pad. Yep, there it is on the desk next to my laptop. 
• Still gotta be able to jot things down...
• The Cloud. Our law firm is almost entirely Cloud based. As such, I can work anywhere I have internet. Our Cloud system includes:
• Office 365 for so, so, so much:
• Multiple-platforms means full functionality on desktop computers, laptop computers, iPads, iPhones . . . . Anywhere, and on any device I've got:
• Word
• Excel
• Outlook
• A huge advantage being able to send, retrieve, and index emails from anywhere
• Sharepoint. An online repository for all client files.
• Like taking the office file cabinets with me wherever I go. Again, a huge advantage.
• Rocket Matter
• Simply the best practice management system out there! On every device I have all my contacts, cases, calendars, billing, documents and records. The list goes on and on....
• Skype for direct, real-time communication with office colleagues. 
• It's the modern intercom with video.
• And, it is included with our Office 365 subscription.
• LogMeIn. Occasionally I will need to get on my desktop PC at my law office. LogMeIn let's that happen.

Virtual lawyering, home lawyering, remote lawyering, satellite lawyering, smart lawyering . . .  Call it what you want, a home office can be a real treat! With a couple of exceptions, it can be a duplicate of your regular office, Mine is pretty fancy. It can just as easily be a folding chair and table and a laptop in the corner of an apartment (or even less). Change is good. A home office is a great change of pace for me.

Refresh The Speed of Your iPhone

Like every computer, iPhone's can get sluggish when their on-board memory gets stuffed. Here is a little known trick to clear things out, and re-boost the speed of your iPhone.

Open the AppStore on you iPhone. At the bottom of the screen you will see the Featured, Top Charts, Explore, Search, and Updates buttons. Press any of those buttons ten (10) times in quick succession.  The screen will briefly turn white, and then the AppStore will return.

Your iPhone will now have refreshed memory, and processing speed should be improved.

Tablet Sales Waaayyyy Down

As reported by USA Today tablet sales are way down, including the iPad.  According to the report: "Fourth quarter and year end tablet shipment figures . . . show that growth has nearly evaporated for the iPad, the iPad mini, and competing Samsung and others."

Let me say that I have always been a huge fan of the tablet platform. I was carrying a Motion Computing slate computer  (as they were called then) more than a decade ago. I have been singing the praises of tablets, and especially the iPad, for years. I still use my iPad frequently. However, I understand why sales are down. My iPad has never fully replaced my Mac Book Pro as my go to road warrior machine.  And now that I have an iPhone 6 Plus I can do everything on my phone that I can do on my iPad. Those are the same causes for the downturn highlighted in the USA Today article.

Are tablets going to disappear anytime soon?  I don't think so. Sales are flat but not gone. And there are millions of units out there. Apps will still proliferate, they are simply going to be written cross-platform for smartphones and tablets.

Lawyer Has Phone, Will Practice

A smartphone is an essential tool for any lawyer who does any work away from the office.  My Apple love carries through to my phone, an iPhone 5s.  I have that thing so packed with apps my thumb gets tired flipping through the screens.  But that is part of the fun!

AT&T is my carrier because it delivers reliable phone and data service around the world.  TMobile is also quite good, particularly in Europe.  The price is not so much better, so I stick with old reliable AT&T (although I do thank TMobile for making AT&T more competitive and customer focused -- Go Capitalism!).

Wi-fi is everywhere, but when it is not my AT&T iPhone has hotspot capability so that its 4G can get my computer online fast.  This function came in quite handy during a recent road trip to Southern California.  I let my wife do the driving and our teenage daughter was the co-pilot while I turned the backseat of the car into a rolling office.  With the Mac connected to the internet via the iPhone hotspot I had total connectivity! Awesome!  If only I could get my wife to green light the purchase of an RV (not gonna happen) then I would really have a mobile office . . .

Why not an iPhone 6?  Too much time left on my current contract. . . .

A bluetooth headset is also essential.  A headset provides better listening quality than I get from the speaker on the phone, it allows my hands to be free, and provides more privacy.  My current favorite is the ERA from Jawbone.  It is tiny.  The ear bud is super comfortable and does a fantastic job of keeping the headset in my ear.  It has great battery life, that is extended with the separate carrying case, and in a pinch I can also use it to listen to movies and music with it.

I have the Skype app on my phone and I use it all the time to stay in contact with colleagues in the office.  I also have 8x8's iPhone app installed so that I can be connected virtually to our internet phone system at the office.  The added bonus is that I came make free phone around the world provided I have an internet connection.

New Wearable Smartphone from Samsung

The folks over at BGR are some of the first to break the story on the new non-android, wearable smartphone from Samsung.

Running on Samsung's own Tinzen operating system the Gear S is a fully functioning 3G smartphone.  As you can see from the picture you can also wear it as a watch.  Pretty cool!

Smartphones Are Getting Bigger

Remember when smaller was better in the cell phone world?  Well, we are apparently heading in the opposite direction.  Now smartphones are getting bigger.  Here is the Samsung Galaxy W:

It is a big boy, with a 7 inch screen.  That's BIG.  My iPhone 5S has a 4 inch screen, and it only measures 5 inches from tip to tail.   

The android driven W is on the street in China, and heading for the U.S. It is being referred to as a  "tablet phone," so we have new lexicon to add to our vocab.  My question is how is this thing gonna fit in my pocket?

Jawbone ERA headset review

Plantronics Voyager Legend

For a couple of years now I have been using the Plantronics Voyager Legend bluetooth headset with my iPhone.  I like the secure fit of the over the ear design, and the boom microphone provides excellent audio.  At $99 it's not a bargain, but it works and works well.

I own three VLs.  The problem is that I keep misplacing them. With my latest shortage I decided to scan the web to see what's new in the world of headsets.  The more I searched the more I read about the latest headset from Jawbone, its ERA bluetooth headset.

I went to Amazon, made my Prime purchase, and had a new ERA two days later.  I must say, I am

impressed.  I give it thumbs up for the sleek, tiny design and excellent sound quality.  So far the in-the-ear fit has worked well. With previous Jambone models the in-the-ear idea would tend to fail, and I suffered from the headset falling out of my ear at the worst possible times. Admittedly I have not been doing gymnastics with the ERA on, but it has stayed stable while driving, walking, and working at my desk.  Early on-line reviews were critical of the firmware for the device.  Jawbone seems to have remedied those problems with updates.  Admittedly I am not a sound engineer, I am just a guy talking on the phone.  For doing that the ERA is working great. I don't have any criticisms.

If you register your headset with Jawbone you will enjoy the benefit of being able to download optional voice instructions, a frequently called number list, and more.  You will then also be able to utilize the nifty iPhone app, and install hardware upgrades.

The ERA retails for $99.99.  There is an optional charging case (that provides safe storage and extra battery life) that raises the price to $120.  I opted for the charging case, and am glad I did.

BIGGER iPhones on the Way

As reported by Bloomberg.com, Apple is about to release two new, bigger iPhones. One model will have a 4.7-inch display, compared to the 4-inch screen of the current iPhone 5s, that may be available to ship to retailers around September.  A 5.5-inch version is also being prepared for manufacturing and may be available at the same time, the people said.

How To Find Your Lost iPhone or iPad

If you are a lawyer carrying an iPhone or an iPad, it is likely that device is jammed with important and confidential information.  What happens if you misplace that devise, with all of that important information?

Fortunately Apple has thought of such an unpleasant event, and the iOS operating system has built in security measures.  You can track your lost device, or you can remotely sweep its contents clean (a super erase if you will). Take A Peek At This

Peek is a new calendar app for the iPhone.  I am using it, and I am liking it.  A bit of the back story.  I like the resident calendar on my iPhone just fine.  However, there are times when the small type, and my fat fingers, can be a challenge.  Scrolling through the day, and adding and deleting events can sometimes be befuddling.


I have rolled through a host of alternative calendar apps, without much luck.  Until Peek. 


I spent the $1.99 and gave it a launch.  I have been pleasantly surprised.  Peek is just what I need.  A stripped down app that delivers the basics in a bigger size and with simpler controls.  If I want to see en entire day I can.  If I want to add or delete events I give a simple swipe and then get nice big buttons to do so. 


Peek is not an overblown, bells and whistles app.  It syncs perfectly with my iPhone calendar.  No set up.  No programming.  Just click and go. That is why I like it.

This Would Be A Cool Smart Watch

Smart watches are the next big thing in mobile technology.  Think of an iPhone miniaturized and strapped to your wrist. Not only will smart watches tell time, they will also be phones, calendars, viewers, the whole shabang!  I am not sure how my old eyes will ever be able to see anything on them, but that is a different issue.

There are already a few on the market (Pebble, Sony, Pine) but their technology is infantile.  As with all things tech though, new prototypes are coming out all the time.  One of the coolest designs I have seen is from Todd Hamilton. Now, of course, these models are just that, models. No real hardware exists yet, but Hamilton's designs give us a flashy example of just how cool the smart watch idea can be.

Apple iOS 7

Apple devotees always have higher than reasonable expectations for new stuff coming out of Apple's annual developers conference; and advance reviews of new operating systems from Apple are usually hyper critical.  Guess what?  Apple has announced the new iOS 7 operating system for iPhones and iPads, and the advance reviews are not all bad.  In fact, I would say this year's advance reviews are more positive than usual.  Some techies are even loving what they are seeing.

I consider Boy Genius Report (www.bgr.com) to be a fairly neutral and reliable source of tech information.  There is a series of reviews over at BGR that I have found to be particularly insightful regarding iOS 7.  Click here to check out all the fun stuff hitting the electronic highway via iOS 7 this fall.

Samsung's New Galaxy S 4

I am a dyed in the wool iPhone devotee.  That having been said, I cannot help but take notice of the new Galaxy S 4 smartphone from Samsung.  The Galaxy line has been garnering praise since it first hit the street, and the GS4 is no exception.  No the buzz about this new phone is not overwhelming, but it is positive, and consistent with reviews of earlier models.  The consensus is that the Galaxy is a good phone that continues to get better.

Release Your iPhone's Full Potential

If you are content with your iPhone's off the shelf capabilities read no further. . .  If you have ever sensed that there is more to your iPhone, if you have ever asked yourself "can my iPhone do more?" if you have ever sensed potential being held back -- then read on.

Apple release each model iPhone (and iPad) with a certain level of functionality.  The machines can do more, but for whatever reason, Apple holds them back.  To the rescue come app writers who look behind the electronic curtain, see the potential of the devices, and help you to exploit the full power of the devise ahead of Apple's schedule.

According to Wikipedia, jaibreaking is “the process of removing the limitations on Apple devices running the iOS operating system through the use of software and hardware exploits.”

Over at the Lawyerist.com Josh Camson writes a great article on jailbreaking the iPhone.  According to Josh

When you jailbreak your phone, you use one of those exploits to modify the operating system and gain access to all of the iPhone’s core programming. We’ll discuss why you would want to do that in a bit. But rest assured that jailbroken iPhones can still access iTunes and perform all the functions of any other iPhone.

[T]here are many jailbreak apps that make the iPhone simply easier to use. For example, SBSettings lets you quickly toggle Bluetooth, WiFi, Vibrate, and many other features on and off with a simple swipe right from the home screen. LockInfo, a personal favorite, gives your lockscreen significantly more functionality. Like its competitor IntelliScreenX, LockInfo can display recent e-mails or texts, upcoming appointments, the weather, and stock prices right on the lock screen. The Best Smartphones & Sprint

I have been using iphones for years now.  I have been more than content, so I have not studied the alternatives, other than to know that there is a lot of great stuff out there.  Which phone is best?  To me that is kind of like comparing pink cotton candy and blue cotton candy.  It's all good!

That doesn't mean that there aren't other folks out there that do pay a lot of attention to smartphone options.  One of those people is Zach Epstein.  Zach writes for the Boy Genius Report.  He has recently posted his end of year 2012 review of the best smartphones available from Sprint.

Great Little Known Features of iPad and iPhone

I just came across an article written by Brian Malcolm for law.com highlighting features of iOS 5.1 that I had no idea existed. For example, did you know that your device can read your email messages out loud, and for which you don't need an extra app? The feature is called VoiceOver, and it is already on your device. Want to project your device screen to a TV or projector? You can do that with mirroring. There's lots more.

Brian's article, while written for lawyers, is beneficial for anyone with an iPhone or iPad. It covers features pre-loaded on the devices, apps he likes, and accessories he likes.
