Are You Backing Up Your Outlook Data?

Think about all of the data contained within your Outlook program? All of your contacts. All of your appointments. All of your deadlines. Then think how ominous the task of rebuilding all of that data would be, if there was a crash?

I did think about it recently. It made me nervous. Of course we backup our servers. And my Outlook files are part of that backup. But what if just my computer crashed? I imagined it could be quite frustrating and time consuming to complete a backup of my Outlook files from a server backup. These thoughts caused me to go into my Outlook Help folder and type "backup." The search took me to a link for a product called Safe PST Backup. This is a free Outlook backup tool. I have been running it for a few days now, and I am fairly impressed. It has a clean simple user interface, it is backing up my data at the appointed time, and is doing all it has promised. Also, as I mentioned, it is Free!

Admittedly I have not suffered a data failure, so I have not actually restored from Safe PST Backup, and I am not going to crash my system so that I can try it out! However, I do feel safer with this new tool in place.

Participants Needed for Divorce and Custody Dispute Study

Dr. Julie Ancis, a professor of Counseling Psychology at Georgia State University, is studying women’s experiences with divorce and custody disputes. The purpose of this research is to gain an understanding of women’s experiences within the legal system. Individual interviews are being conducted with participants, and will cover topics such as interactions with attorneys, judges, and guardian ad litems; coping; and parenting issues. Interviews are confidential and tend to last between 1 ½ to 2 1/2 hours. With the knowledge gained through this study, we would like to educate those in the court systems and health professionals about the unique challenges that women may face in divorce and custody disputes. Get Paid To Recycle Your Old Cell Phones

For those of you following this blog recently, you will recall my cell phone sagas. Those frustrating trials and errors have left me with two brand new cell phones taking up drawer space. I thought they were useless until now. Gazelle.com is a website that will buy your cell phones. Type in your make and model, answer three or four questions about the condition of the phone(s), and gazelle will instantly quote you a buy back price. I paid a total of $499 for my two useless phones. Gazelle is buying them back for $308! That's pretty awesome. I get to feel green, and get a bit of green back for my old phones.

Thank You Wal Mart

I needed a new computer for the house. Something that would control our home network, allow me to log in to the office via GoToMyPC.com, and maybe do some other light computing like word processing and browsing the internet. I checked the ads for the electronics specialty stores and saw advertised prices of $699, $799, and higher. More than I wanted to pay. I checked the famous on-line vendors. Modest laptops started in the mid $400s, but by the time you added minimal software, shipping, etc., prices approached $1000. Again, more than I wanted to pay. I called my local Wal Mart and asked if they carried computers (honestly I did not know if they did)?. I got a "yes," so I headed over to the store.

In the electronics department I found an entire aisle of desktop PCs and notebook computers. Not a user friendly display. None of the demo machines were turned on, and inventories were low. However, I find a heck of a bargain. I bought my self an Acer Aspire 5515 notebook. AMD Athlon processor that works just fine; 15" color screen; 3 GB of RAM; 160 GB hard drive; read-write DVD; wireless LAN. Actually more horsepower than I needed.

Now comes the really good news! The price? $349! Yes, $349! Two, three years ago I would have been looking at more than a Grand. Even with California Sales tax and environmental fees I was out the door for less than $400!

Got home, fired my new baby up, and have been happily computing ever since. Quickly installed the home network, and now I am computing away. Downloaded a free copy of OpenOffice should I need to do any word processing, spreadsheets, etc.

ABA Law Practice Management Section

The American Bar Association is a wealth of family law, practice management, and technology resources. I have found it's Law Practice Management Section to be a real find. The section's Law Practice magazine is on my list of invaluable reads. The section sponsors the ABA's highly touted Techshow. The section's website is a harvest of information on practice management and technology. And Keeping Your Clients Happy While Doing It, Effective Law Firm Administrations Depends Upon Connecting With Others . . . . It goes on and on.

I will admit that everything about the ABA is expensive (membership for lawyers in practice 10 years or more is $399 per year) ! Then again, everything marketed to lawyers is over priced. Relatively speaking, the investment in the ABA's LPM section is about as good a value as you are going to find, with annual dues at . Annual section dues are $50. Right now the ABA has a $40 section membership discount promotion going on.
